My Approach

As a person, I bring genuine curiosity and kindness to my therapeutic space.  Our work together is a sacred time for you to experiment with, discover, and transform yourself. As a psychotherapist, I am trauma informed and I work at the intersection of psychodynamic work and somatic work.

What does this mean?

It means we work together to explore all that you are willing to bring into our sessions; including emotional experiences, conscious & unconscious material, bodily experiences & sensations, life stories & narratives, familial and ancestral history, fantasies, and dreams. We examine pattern and habits in your relationships, in your thoughts and feelings, and in your physical body.

There might be times when what is happening in our therapeutic relationship can reflect other relationships in your life. An exploration of what is happening between us can be useful to your work, if the opportunity presents itself.

Therapy with each client is different, because each one of us is unique. You are the true expert in yourself. I walk alongside you. The more you can trust and express this expertise in yourself, the more genuine our work together can be.

It may take time and courage to expand your capacity to be comfortable in your own skin. You will not be alone, we will work and honor your process together.

I make great attempts to create safety by consciously working from an intersectional, anti-racist, anti-oppression, and Feminist lens. The personal realm inherently involves our social, cultural, sexual, economic, and ancestral parts.

The process of psychotherapy

People who come to therapy do so because they desire change. Psychotherapy brings about change in part through the joint exploration of beliefs, emotions, memories, and thought patterns that have occurred and developed over time. These include thoughts and feelings that have been unconscious – i.e. outside ordinary awareness.

They also include defenses that have been adopted to protect us from uncomfortable truths about ourselves and other people in our lives. In order for change to occur, these defenses and patterns must be altered. It is important that you are aware that this can at times be an uncomfortable experience.

The therapeutic environment must be safe (in order to foster trust), but also challenging, or it will simply maintain the status quo and fail to bring about the desired change. The balance between continuity and change is one that both therapist and client are continually striving to maintain, and it requires commitment, effort, and honesty from both parties.

Clients are entitled to regular sessions with a fully qualified therapist who is respectful, engaged, reliable, and committed to the therapeutic process and to ongoing professional development. You are entitled (and invited) to raise any concerns or questions you have about the therapeutic process with me at any time.
