About Sara and Being With Psychotherapy

I was touched by grief at a young age when I lost my father very suddenly.  The immensity of the mourning process really challenged my young body, and I suffered from many physical ailments without being able to understand their root. During moments of reprieve, I loved to dance and move. Movement became a expressive channel for everything I did not know yet how to speak in words. I went on to study dance & choreography at York University and hold a BFA (Hons) in Dance.

My journey into understanding the human body's potential for growth and transformation continued when I embarked on a 15 year career as a Registered Midwife & Perinatal Doula. I hold a BHSc (Hons) in Midwifery from Metropolitan University, and I am currently a Contract Lecturer in the Midwifery Education Program. This career was made deeply memorable by the privilege I held of caring and advocating for over a thousand women/birthing persons, and their families, as they journeyed through their pregnancies, births, and postpartum periods.

I entered psychotherapy at a time when I needed support to integrate the intensity of my experiences on the frontline, and continued on as I entered into the newness of motherhood myself. Inspired by my own therapist, I continued on to study at The Centre for Training in Psychotherapy in Toronto in 2020, and now hold the title of Therapist in Training (TT-CTP), and hold a membership in The Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy (CAPT).

For me, one of the really profound effects of therapy has been how, slowly, over time, it increased my tolerance to appreciate my own humanness and  the humanity of those around me. Therapy helped to expand my understanding of myself and of my world. I have a lot of reverence for this process - similar in some ways to the momentous arc of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Similar also, to the way the body is altered by a dance, or liberated by movement.
